Diagnostic Process
There are a number of processes which may be undertaken during the course of assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder. These may vary depending on your geographical location, medical practitioner, services currently available etc but will generally follow a process similar to that below. The combination of the results of these assessments generally combine to form a final diagnosis.

PAEDIATRIC MEDICAL ASSESSMENT
GPs will most likely refer a child suspected of being Autistic to a local Paediatrician for an initial appointment where assessment-based (psychosocial) questions are posed, a general medical examination may be performed and the next step for assessment will be discussed.
AUDIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
Because of the unusual auditory responses of "acting as though deaf" witnessed in many Autistic children, it is common for a Hearing Test to be undertaken at a local Hearing Clinic. These tests are not in any way physically painful, however unusual environments and enclosed sound booths may be distressing and unfortunately many children, particularly very young children, are not able to be tested accurately because of this.
BLOOD TESTS
Although there is no blood test for Autism, blood tests may be scheduled in order to rule out other disabilities such as Fragile-X syndrome. These tests are most often very distressing for the child and parents alike. Parents are encouraged to contact the Coffs Coast Autism Spectrum Disorder Support Group Inc prior to undertaking blood tests for suggestions on how other parents have coped with this process and possible strategies to minimise the distress for the child or CLICK HERE. It is noteworthy that these blood tests may be expensive and parents are encouraged to enquire about fees with their referring doctor/paediatrician or the pathology to which they are being referred.
COMMUNICATION/SENSORY ASSESSMENT
A Communication Assessment by a suitable speech pathologist and Sensory Assessment by an appropriate Occupational Therapist are typically required. On the Coffs Coast these services are ordinarily sourced through the Coffs Harbour Health Campus or Early Childhood Intervention Centre. The results of these assessments may be valuable in structuring a program for the child's development.
PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT & BEHAVIOURAL OBSERVATION
A Psychological Assessment is usually performed by a Clinical Psychologist during which time behavioural observations are also made, assessment information is gathered and diagnostic criteria and conclusions are discussed with families. There is a shortage of Clinical Psychologists on the Coffs Coast and consequently often there is a waiting list. Alternatively, it is quite possible that the Psychological Assessment may be performed at Tumbatin Clinic in Sydney or through a referral to a professional in Brisbane.
